Čapljina

A green Herzegovina town on the Neretva delta — gateway to Mogorjelo, Hutovo Blato, and Počitelj.

Počitelj Ottoman village in Čapljina municipality

Overview

Čapljina sits on the fertile Neretva delta, roughly 30 km south of Mostar on the main highway toward the Adriatic coast. Population is around 27,000. The landscape here is surprisingly green for Herzegovina — the Neretva's annual floods historically deposited rich alluvial soil, making the town and its surrounding villages a centre of agriculture: mandarins, pomegranates, figs, tobacco, and wine.

The town is a hub for three nearby attractions that together make Čapljina a compact base for half a day of exploring. Počitelj — the walled Ottoman hill village — sits 12 km northwest, at the top of a steep limestone cliff above the Neretva. Mogorjelo — a 4th-century Roman villa rustica — is 3 km from central Čapljina and one of the best-preserved Roman agricultural estates in the Balkans; entry is free, the site is open-air. Hutovo Blato — a Ramsar-listed wetland park with 240+ bird species — is 10 km south, accessible by boat safari.

The Neretva delta itself is worth a pause. The river widens significantly here before reaching the Adriatic at Opuzen (just inside Croatia). Wooden fishing boats still work the side channels; roadside stands sell honey, brandy, and dried figs in autumn. The main road (M17) runs along the valley with views back toward Mostar to the north and toward Neum to the south.

Historical context: Čapljina was an important Roman crossroads — Mogorjelo produced olive oil and wine for export along the Narona (Roman name for the Neretva valley) road network. The Ottoman period added Počitelj as a fortified river crossing; Austro-Hungarian rule built the railway that still cuts through the town. Today Čapljina is administratively in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of the Federation of BiH.

For travellers on our tours: most full-day Mostar tours (Mostar FD, Dubrovnik, Sarajevo) pass through Čapljina on the drive to/from Kravica, with a 30-minute stop at Počitelj. The Mostar Private Driver option can add Mogorjelo (free, 30 min) or Hutovo Blato (roughly 2 hours for the boat safari, advance booking required) on request.

Practical notes: the best base for exploring the three attractions is either Mostar or a guesthouse in Čapljina itself (several small options available). Restaurants in town serve Herzegovinian food — grilled lamb, stews, and local wine — at significantly lower prices than Mostar's old-town tourist zone.
